In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew set out aboard Endurance on a mission to cross Antarctica, a mission that became one of history’s greatest tales of courage and survival. Trapped in the ice and facing impossible odds, Shackleton’s unwavering leadership and hope kept his crew alive, forging a legacy that embodies resilience and adventure.

Honour one of history’s greatest feats of endurance—the 800-mile voyage across the savage Southern Ocean and the brutal crossing of South Georgia to save their crew. A tribute to Crean, Worsley, and Shackleton’s courage and loyalty, it celebrates leadership under extreme pressure and the human spirit’s refusal to surrender.

Antarctic Story

I’ve been to Antarctica on two deployments onboard HMS Endurance, 6 months at a time over 2 years 1997 to 1999, though time hardly seems to touch a place like that.

We began in South Georgia and traced the path of Shackleton’s Endurance into the Weddell Sea, then via Deception Island and onward to the Antarctic Peninsula.

Our work took us between scientific stations and international teams — supporting research, surveying, lending hands to those who live on the edge of the world, and experiencing a quiet rhythm shaped by ice, weather, and wildlife.

Some moments never leave you:
Being dropped by helicopter on a remote island and coming face to face with a nonchalant nesting albatross.
Watching humpbacks rise through golden evening water.
Penguins, seals, endless sky, magical iceberg sculptures and the kind of silence that becomes part of you.

Our visits to Rothera, Port Lockroy, Grytviken, as well as bases and ships from our international friends.

Those journeys shaped everything you see here, a tribute to wonder, endurance, and the beauty of a place that still feels untouched by time.

We would love to hear about your time down in Antarctica, or your plans to travel there in the future. Email us at hello@vintageantarctica.com
